555 baht is not a laugh

Tipjai Voice 1 read an amount of 555 baht as laughter. Version 1.1 reads it as a number. Hear both, see how it was checked, and what is left.

Summary

  • In Thai chat, 555 means laughter: ห้า (five) sounds like ฮ่า (ha). So Tipjai Voice 1 read every 555 as ฮ่าฮ่าฮ่า, even when 555 was the amount.
  • Version 1.1 reads amounts as numbers: 555 บาท is read ห้าร้อยห้าสิบห้า บาท (five hundred fifty-five baht). A 555 in the message is still a laugh.
  • All 300 test alerts are read word for word as before, so every number in the paper and on the model card holds for 1.1.
  • No viewer has heard the mistake: this voice does not read live tips on Tipjai yet.

Why it happened

A tip alert has three parts: the supporter's name, the amount and a message. Before anything is spoken, a reader turns what was typed into the words that should be said. Voice 1 turned a run of fives such as 555 into ฮ่าฮ่าฮ่า wherever it stood. Someone who sent 555 baht heard laughter instead of the amount, and 1,555 baht became “one” followed by laughter.

Version 1.1 first asks whether the number is money. A number right before the word บาท (baht) or right after ฿ is an amount, and a 555 inside a longer number is part of that number; all of these are read as numbers. A trailing .00 before บาท is not read, and an amount with satang is read as satang: 20.50 baht is twenty baht fifty satang. Every other 555 is still a laugh.

We found the mistake ourselves on 11 October 2026 and published the fixed version on 15 October 2026.

How we checked

Test alerts read as before
300 / 300

including the 60 the paper scored

Stress alerts
400 / 400

passed with no problem

Version 1.1 changes only how amounts are read; the voice is the same, and the same text always gives the same sound. So we checked two things. First, every alert in the four test sets we have already used, 300 in all, must be read word for word as Voice 1 reads it: 300 of 300 are. The sound is therefore the same, and the scores already measured are 1.1's scores too.

Second, 400 tip alerts built to be harder than real ones (odd names, emoji, many scripts, amounts of every size, messages at Tipjai's maximum length) went through 1.1: 400 passed, with no stall, silence or clipping, and reading them again gave the same sound every time.

What is left

  • 555 without bahtWithout บาท or ฿ next to it we cannot tell an amount from a laugh, so it is read as a laugh.
  • Names and naturalnessNeither changed in 1.1; both remain Tipjai Voice 2's main work.
